England were denied their perfect start to the latest World Cup qualifiers in the UEFA section after Poland struck late to earn an impressive point when the two countries met at the PGE Narodowy in the Polish capital of Warsaw on Wednesday night.
The Three Lions of England had won all their five games in Group I before they met Poland away from home. One of those five victories came at home against Poland with Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire netting the winning goal five minutes from time to secure a 2-1 win for England.
Hosts Poland and England were involved in a tight and tense affair on the pitch before the latter made the breakthrough with eighteen (18) minutes left on the clock. Harry Kane scored the goal for England to move him within 12 goals of the current record held by Wayne Rooney. England were unable to hold on to that lead thanks to the late strike from Damian Szymanski. Szymanski scored a late leveller off the assist from team skipper and Bayern Munich hitman Robert Lewandowski.
Despite gaining a point at the end of the home game with England, Poland dropped from second to third on the Group 1 standings thanks to the form shown by Albania at home to San Marino. England are still in the top position in the group but their lead has been cut down to four points after Albania thrashed San Marino 5-0 at home. Rey Manaj, Qasim Laci, Armando Broja, Elseid Hysaj and Myrto Uzuni scored the goals for the Albanians.
In the other game played from the sixth set of games in Group I, Hungary beat Andorra 2-1 at home.
After six games in Group I, leaders England have 16 points, while Albania are in second with 12 points. Poland are third with 11 points, while Hungary in fourth place have ten points. Andorra and San Marino are in fifth and sixth place on the table with three points and zero point respectively.
