The Polish football Association has announced that in a statement that Waldemar Fornalik will be taking charge of the national team after the team’s exit from the Euro 2012 in the group stages. Poland managed to qualify for the Euro 2012 as one of the cohosts. Hence, they were expected to do well at this competition due to the home advantage. They are in the same group containing the likes of Czech Republic, Russia, and Greece. Despite having a relatively easy group on paper, Poland failed to get past the group stages of the competition.

After having overseen a disastrous major competition, Franciszek Smuda decided to step down from his post as the national team manager of Poland. The football Association of Poland has been searching for a replacement since his resignation. They seem to have found the replacement in the form of Waldemar Fornalik, who will be taking charge of the national team with immediate effect. He will be given the task of guiding the team to the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The qualification phase for the World Cup will be beginning shortly. Waldemar Fornalik will be hoping to put behind the disappointment of being eliminated from the Euro 2012 at an early stage.

“Of course it’s a big honour to be in charge of the national team. It is a big challenge and a big responsibility because I know how big the expectations of Poland fans are,” said Waldemar Fornalik in his first press conference as the Poland national team manager. “I think Fornalik is one of the most talented Polish coaches and I hope he will do a great job for the national team,” said the chief executive of the Poland football Association – Grzegorz Lato. Poland will be facing the likes of England and Ukraine in the group stages of the World Cup qualification.
