Polish international Robert Lewandowski has revealed that he made no apology to his Bayern Munich teammate Manuel Neuer after voting for Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo in the latest FIFA Ballon d’Or award ceremony.
Neuer would have become the first goalkeeper to have won this award. He was in the running until the last moment after his exploits with Bayern and Germany. He won the league title with Bayern Munich and went on to lift the World Cup with Germany in Brazil. Ronaldo, meanwhile, won the Champions League with Madrid but he had a very disappointing World Cup.
Lewandowski joined ranks withNeuer only this season and he says that he is aware of the selection he made when it comes to the FIFA Ballon d’Or award. He does not see any reason to apologise forNeuer, as he feels that Ronaldo was more worthy of the award.
Ronaldo set a new record of scoring more than 15 goals in a single Champions League campaign, but he finished the World Cup with just one goal to his name. Lionel Messi came second in the rankings, although he did not win any trophy at club and international level. Last season was also seen as the worst in recent times for the little Argentine.
“It was a mistake to vote for Ronaldo. Today, I would clearly vote Neuer, but I voted back someday back in August and would vote differently today. That was thoughtless, but he voted in passing back in August. We discussed it and he corrected it in public that he believes Neuer is No. 1 and he was a bit thoughtless and so it’s OK. I am aware of whom I voted for, and I don’t want to apologise for it,” said the Polish international, who has 10 goals in 21 matches this season.
